What is the Party Wall Act?
The Act is in place to enable an owner to carry out works to a party wall or structure while safeguarding the interests of their neighbour.
It is your responsibility, not the responsibility of your architect or your Local Authority to appoint a Party Wall Surveyor to assist you in resolving any dispute that may arise between the two parties concerning the works.
This includes:
• Work carried out on an existing structure, or a wall that is shared with another property
• Building a new wall either as part of a structure or free-standing, up to or astride the boundary with another property.
• Excavations near a neighbouring building.
The basis of the Party Wall Act defines and affirms the rights of a person (the ‘building owner’) wishing to cut into a party wall or to excavate for new foundations within a specified distance of an adjoining structure (the ‘adjoining owner’). Both parties may appoint a Party Wall Surveyor if the building work is notifiable under the Party Wall Act.

'I would recommend Jonathan in a heartbeat. From the off, Jonathan was extremely helpful and responsive. He made light work of what could have been a very stressful process given that our adjoining landowner is a local authority. His reputation in the Wandsworth area precedes him – and for good reason.
